Chances are this is your first vacation away from your parents. So you have to be responsible for your safety. First, never travel to another state or another country alone. Always have your parents’ permission before you go. Make sure that you travel with a group of friends, even when you get down there, always stay together. There is safety in numbers. Always make sure that your hotel room is secured and locked even when you are in it. Try not to bring any valuables when you go on vacation. If possible bring travelers checks when traveling, this way if they get stolen you can get them replaced without loosing any money. Try not to use credit cards too much or if you have to try to bring very low limit cards. Always bring your cell phone when traveling and bring your phone charger. Make sure that your phone is charged at all times. If you meet new people on spring break, make sure that you meet in public places and not back in your hotel or theirs. Always meet in restaurants and try to avoid bars, if you don’t know the people you are meeting. Bars, especially in spring break towns can be a little out of control so try a local restaurant or a local shopping mall. There is nothing wrong with meeting new people but you just have to take them at face value. People on spring break even though they are students, believe that they will never see these people again so they will say and do anything to get what they want. Spring break used to be friends taking a week long vacation to places like Florida to spend the week lying on the beach and going dancing at night. In some cases, spring break means excessive drinking and passing out on the beach. These days there is a lot more violence during spring break than ever before. Some schools have sponsored spring breaks, this may not seem like a great time but as long as you are safe you have a good time. Do some research on the spring break destination before traveling. Get a hold of the local police department’s phone number and local authorities and if you are traveling to another country, get the numbers to the Embassy. It may sound a bit far fetched but you never know what could happen and it truly is best to be safe than sorry. Talk to your parents before traveling, they may have safety tips to offer you. |
