Alternative To Spring Break: Habitat For Humanity

If you are not a typical spring break student where you like to drink a lot and party all the time but you want to have a memorable spring break try something different. You can volunteer your time to some really great destinations such as Habitat For Humanity. Everyone has heard of this great organization that was started by Millard Fuller his wife Linda. For those students not familiar with this organization, they are a not for profit organization that provides families who cannot afford a home of their own, a low priced home that they can afford. Currently there are over 300,000 homes that have been built all over the world and they have found shelter for over 1.5 million people spread out over 3,000 communities.

This organization works strictly on a volunteer basis. Volunteers may give their time or provide materials and services that are needed to help these homes get built. The people whose homes are being built even participate in the building of their own homes. All families that these homes are being built for have to apply; they come on a financial need basis. Though Habitat for Humanity has been called a Christian charity, families of any race and any religion are provided housing if they qualify.

If you are looking for a great way to spend your spring break, why not volunteer your time to your local Habitat For Humanity Location. Most cities have a local chapter. You can volunteer to paint, deliver supplies, plumbing services, carpentry, even if you have no experience, this is a strictly volunteer basis. If you are interested in donating some of your time, check out the habitat.org website and click on the volunteer link and then you will click on the Volunteer Locally link to find a Habitat For Humanity chapter nearest you.

There are Youth Programs, Women Build and Global Village Programs available. To find out if your church has ties to Habitat For Humanity, click on the Your Church and Habitat link and get started. Not only will you help another family get the home they much need but also you will feel a sense of accomplishments that you chose to donate your College Spring Break to help others rather than party. In addition, this would look great on a resume when you start to look for a job. Think, if you really find enjoyment helping others, you could help on an ongoing basis and not just for a week out of the year.

It feels great to help someone in need. You could really help a family with children who really need a home of their own that may not be able to afford. These are not families who have lost their homes because they defaulted on just their mortgages but families who lost their homes due to fire, flood or hurricanes. Families from all walks of life are in need of homes and you can be a huge part of it.
