The great thing about student loans is that they are deferred until after graduation. This allows you the luxury of not having to pay back the loan until after graduation but in the 4 years that you are going to school, you should figure out a way to start saving up for repayment on these loans. On student loans the interest on some loans start to accumulate when the loan is given. If you don’t have a subsidized loan then you will be responsible for that interest right from the gate.
The difference in student loans is that if you are even one day off in making your payments, you are considered to be in delinquency. Delinquencies in student loans have consequences and they may include penalties or a negative remark on your credit report. You are too young to have a mark that takes 7 years to come off of your credit report. The second that you start to fall behind on your student loans, you should contact your lender right away. The last thing that you want to do is fall behind on your loans. The federal government makes it easy for you to get these loans and they give you time to graduate and often they give you 9 months after graduation to start paying off these loans. There is no reason why in the 4 years you are studying and most likely working that you can’t get ahead of these payments. In the event that you start to fall behind, try not to wait until the last minute to call your lender. Once you start up communications with your lender you should make sure that your conversations are well documented. You should keep a detailed log of your conversation. Get the name of the person who you spoke and write down what time you called. Write a brief description of what you said and what they said. Ask you start paying off your loans make sure that you keep all receipts, cancelled checks and emails (print them) in one organized folder. If you send letters certified letters keep all the receipts. If you get into a heated conversation with the rep on the other end of the phone, try to stay calm. If you are unreasonable, they also keep records. Plus, nothing is going to get accomplished by yelling. If you decide to keep the communications open by letter writing, make sure that your point is made with good grammar and you articulate the problem. This will avoid a communication problem. You goal here is to come to an agreement on your payments if you default. If all of this sounds like a hassle then you can avoid all of this by making your payments on time. Going to college is a step into adulthood and making the commitment to repaying these loans is a sign of becoming an adult. |
