Students who are in need for College Tuition assistance will do anything they can to make sure that they get the funding that they need in order to go to school. Sometimes these will include loans, grants and scholarships. There is another way to offset the cost of College. This would be the Work Study Program, this is where you work for the College and in return their “ paycheck” would be taken off the tuition bill. These jobs are often 10 to 20 hours a week and they are generally on campus. But is the Work Study Program for you?

These programs work well for students who are living on Campus and do not have outside jobs. For students who go to school full time and have part time jobs outside of the College may not have the time to commit to the program. The amount of money that you can earn for these programs are what the Federal Minimum wage, in some places it could be higher. If this is something that you are interested in then talk to your school’s financial aid office. They can explain what is entailed and how the program works. Then you can see what jobs are available.

If you are interested in this program you have to apply early, there are hundreds of students who will be tying to find these jobs as well. The positions are given to those who apply early and what level of need and what you need as far as funding goes. The earlier the better. There are also Non Federal Work Study Programs; this application is not based on any financial need of the student. These jobs can be anything from dining hall services, campus library, and office work in the school’s Major Departments. These hours are not limited to 10 to 20 hours like on the federal basis. These hours will depend on your availability and what the supervisor has available.

Work Study Programs work very well in theory. It is up to student to make the commitment to attend the jobs. You have to remember that you have to work hard to keep up your grades. College is such a different way of life, especially if you are a first time student. These jobs are not limited to students who live on Campus. Any students may apply; they are not limited to any students. If you are in need of some extra funding but don’t want to make the commitment to repaying more money, then consider the Work Study Program.

All Colleges have them but these jobs are in high demand, so make sure that you apply early enough. Don’t think that the workstudy will take over your day. The supervisors have to take into consideration your class schedules since that is the reason why you are there. Talk to your high school guidance counselor and your parents and see if this is something that is right for you.
