Summer Jobs for Students

Once you get out of the dorms and get into an apartment, you’re much more likely to hang around your college town during the summer months. This is when students start realizing that they’re going to need to be making money during the summer if they’re going to keep their apartment, and many realize that they can work long hours in the summer months in order to give themselves a little nest egg to play with. There is both good and bad news when it comes to summer jobs for students.

The Good News

The good news about summer jobs for students is that they’re everywhere. During the school year, you likely will have to compete many other student applicants for a job, making it much more difficult to get the kind of job that you really want. Once the summer begins, however, most of these students head home, giving you a clear path for a summer job. If you don’t care for the job that you’ve currently got, this is a great time to switch to a new one, as you’ll have a much clearer field than those students who tried to get the job during the school year.

The other good news? If you’ve got a summer job you love, see if you can keep it during the school year. Speak with your manager or boss immediately so that they know that you’re interested not only in keeping the job during the summer, but during the school year too. This is often an added incentive for the boss to hire you and to keep you on.

The Bad News

What could possibly be bad about summer jobs for students? How about the fact that they’re in the summer? Many students, especially those who are living away from home for the summer for the first time, find that they hate working during the summer months. They’re used to being home and enjoying themselves and they find, instead, that they have to spend their time working and earning a living. This is when college students begin to realize what the working world is like, and many find that even though it’s stressful, they enjoy it because they have extra money in their pockets.

Summer jobs are everywhere, and when you find one that you want, you can often turn it into a great job to have during the school months as well.
