International Student Services Are a Positive Force

International student services vary a great deal from organization to organization and institution to institution. Many American universities have liaison officers to handle international student services, going out of their way to make sure that foreign guests have whatever they need to enhance their stays. They will often sponsor international student services organization, where American students interested in other cultures and foreign students from a wide variety of countries can meet, hold social activities and international events of various sorts. These can range from a celebration of Octoberfest for German students to Cinco de Mayo for Mexican students. Muslim students from the Middle East will celebrate Ramadan, Indian students will celebrate their festivals, and Japanese students can share various aspects of their culture, to name just a few.

When hosting international students, many Americans believe there is an obligation to provide international student services. International students come to the US for many reasons, one of which is to serve as goodwill ambassadors for their countries. They seek to broaden international knowledge and understanding. Many also see the US as a venue for getting a better education than that which is provided in their countries. American universities have a reputation for providing top flight educations and students from many countries seek to come here to study engineering, information technology and other technical areas. In fact, many technically oriented programs have more international students than American students enrolled.

Americans have a long and proud tradition of welcoming international students and providing quality international student services. America itself is a nation founded by immigrants and throughout the history of the US it has been seen as a melting pot. By melting pot, most academics believe that the US has grown in spiritual strength as a nation because the best and the brightest of many nations have chosen to come here and become citizens. Many of those who chose to come here came first as international students, and then changed their visas and became first residents and then citizens. International student services organizations often were their first contact with the US, and the good impression made and led to an increase in educated and talented people wishing to become American citizens. The backbone of the American technology industry in the eyes of many comes from talented people who came here from other counties. And many other nations believe that the backbone of their own high tech programs rest in those students who trained in American universities, assisted by international student services organizations. That is especially true in countries like India with a strong English language tradition due to their former relationship with the United Kingdom.
