Staying Safe On Campus

    If you will be living on Campus during your College years, there are some safety precautions that you should take. For your first year of College you should request having a roommate. There is safety in numbers and it may make you feel safe if this is the first time that you have been away from home. Find out what you can and cannot have in your dorm room. Most dorms come with standard locks. Find out if you can add a security chain for added security.

    At most Colleges there will be orientation when it comes to dorm living. There may be curfews that have to be met. These should be taken very seriously. These rules are not to treat you like kids but for your own safety. If you have any night classes stay on the lighted paths only. Most campuses have night security but you want to make sure that you stay safe. Try to find a classmate to walk back to the dorms with you after dark.

    Never invite anyone that you don’t know back to the dorm with you. If you do make sure that you have other people there as well. It is ok to make friends but remember that you just met these people and you don’t them very well. Even when you are in your dorm room, you should hide your valuables like your wallet, pocket book and jewelry. These precautions are not insults to your roommate but you want to cover yourself just as they will be doing too.

    The first year can be tough and getting to know the routines and the layout of the campus will take some time. If you start to encounter any problems with any other students then speak to your RA. These are there to help you, if a more serious problem arises talk to your dean. Don’t feel like a small problem is a small problem. You are the responsibility of the College as long as you go there. They are there to help you.

    Before you attend the College, talk to the dean or head of security for the dorms. Make sure if the dorms have a curfew where they lock the doors that you make sure that you are in on time. Your parents are paying a lot of money to entrust your care to the College. Have your parents talk to the school and see what they can do within the school rules to make your dorm room a bit more secure.

    Always make sure that your cell phone is plugged in and charged. Make sure that you have all of the College’s security information at your fingertips. These articles are not designed to scare you they are there to protect you and make you aware of your surroundings even though you are attending school. When you go off Campus, always travel in numbers, they good old saying goes There is safety in numbers.
