Livin On Your Own At College

    You will soon find that living at College and living at home are two very different things. When you live at home, you can keep your room any way you want. You can play music as loud as it is tolerable and you can come and go, as you want. Now, when you live at College, you are sharing your space with one or more roommates and you have be extremely respectful of their privacy or you will have some problems down the line. You will be responsible for getting yourself up for school, no more reminders from Mom that you are late for school. There is no more breakfast ready on the table for you.

    You are expected to act like an adult in school and this means getting yourself up for school every day. You are responsible for your own schedule. You will have to decide when you do your laundry, when you are going to clean up your room and when you are going to eat. You won’t have access to a car unless you have one on campus, so you will have to figure out a way to get around. You will be responsible for everything you do. If you do something wrong, you will have to answer to the problem. You won’t have your parents around to make sure that you get up for school. If you have any absents in class, you will be responsible for getting the make up work and see what you missed.

    You can call the professor’s office and get the reading assignments and if there was any homework. If you even miss one day, you could really miss a lot. Most classes only give acceptable 3missed classes per semester before you fail. So find out from each class how many acceptable classes can be missed. Try hard to make your self a routine, lateness for class is not acceptable either. There are no class bells when class is over, you are supposed to have a watch and figure out how much time it will take you to get from class to class and make sure that you get there on time.

    You may not get it the first week; it will take time to get to know the campus and the best routes to take to get to each class on time. If you and your roommate can work together to help each other get adjusted to living away from home, you will do just fine. This doesn’t mean that you have to wake each other up every day for class but kind of be each other’s support system. Remember, you are starting school away from home at the same time and she may be feeling the same way as you.
