What is a College Grant? A College Grant is a financial award that is provided from a federal agency. This grant can help you pay for tuition, books and College Expenses. These grants are often called Free Money, since they do not have to be paid back. There are two different types of College Grants; the Direct Grant, which is the kind that you can apply directly to the Federal Government and the second, is the Pass Through Grants. These are grants that you apply through your state and the state applies to the Federal Government and then once it is approved it goes back through the state. The state in this case acts like a middleman. There are more than 1,000 grants offered to students all over the United States. Currently there are 26 federal agencies like the United States Department of Education offering these grants. The most popular student grant is the Pell Grant. These grants are given to students who are in need of help paying for College. These students must be enrolled in an Undergraduate program. Often these grants are offers to student who are enrolled in a graduate teaching program. There are three other major grants available, the Academic Competitiveness Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant and the National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant or the National SMART Grant. When you are chosen to receive a grant, you can either receive the funds in the form of a check to you or the grant will be passed along to your college and the remainder if any will get to you via a check. The best places to get these grant applications is through the Internet. You can simply download the application and fill out the information. You will need your basic information such as drivers license, income information, date of birth, your parent’s income tax information. They want to makes sure that you are really in need of the grant. There are so many students who apply and don’t really need it and often times it takes away from students who really do need it. The best way to get more information on each grant, the requirements and deadlines is to look them up online. Or you can contact the United States Department of Education. Some awards are higher than others, so you should find out which grants pay better and if there are any exceptions on applying for more than one grant at a time. Start looking up grants early, it is best to gather your information early and start applying well before the application deadline. |
