Living Within A Budget

These days with tighter economic times we have turned to using our credit cards more than ever. The mindset is that if we use credit cards we can save cash. But you will need to use the cash to pay off the credit cards. There is a check and balance system to using a credit card, it is called living on a budget. You say it can’t be done but it can. It can be done for adults and it can be done for College Students too. You would be surprised to find out how many people don’t know what a budget is.

A budget starts out with a list of things that you spend your money on a weekly or monthly basis. This list will include bills, food, rent (if applicable), credit cards, entertainment etc. Then you will gather a total of the amount of money that you make a week or on a monthly basis and it is here that you realize that you can work within a budget or not. If not, then you will need to make cuts so you can. If for example, you go out to eat a lot, say 5 times a week. Then cut it back to 2 days a week. If you spend $ 50 on shoes a week, you will have to cut back on shoe shopping to once a month or create a shoe fund, where extra cash or change is placed until you save up enough for the shoes you want.

This is where most students and people get into trouble. They think, hey I will just use the credit card to pay for the shoes and save money. At the second that you purchase those shoes on your credit card you prevented cash from being used but you did not save money. Now, you will have to use the cash you make next month to pay for the shoes that you bought this month.

The best way to avoid these things is to use your credit card wisely. Don’t think that you always have to use these credit cards to pay for things. Think about something before you make a purchase, ask yourself, is this a need or do I just want it? Chances are, it will be a want and not a need. Start to put some money aside for those things that you want and this way you can afford it and it won’t strain your budget.

The first few months of not using the credit cards will be tough but if stick with the budget you will find that you can buy things without breaking your bank or pulling out your plastic. If you have never created a budget you can get some great outlines on line or create your budget with the money that is going towards all expenses and the money that you bring in every month. It may take some time to get the budget right but in the end it will all work out.
