Why Choosing A Major Is Important

If you are about to enter College for the first time, you know when you apply for admissions that you will have to declare a major. A major is the course of study that you want to take when going to College. Most Colleges have everything under the sun when it comes to majors but this is something that you have to decide before you start school. There are some undecided students who don’t know what to do with their lives after school so they enter College under Liberal Studies.

Not having decided on at least a major could end up costing you money in the long term. The reason is simple, when you sign up for College your course study is based on that major. If you, for example sign up to be a Criminal Justice student and take a semester or two worth of classes and then in the second year decide that you would rather be a Teacher, then you have wasted that time in school for nothing.

If you are on a scholarship for a specific major and you change majors then you will lose the scholarship. Remember the loans that you take out reflect 4 years of school. If you choose the wrong major in the first year, you may not have enough money to continue with the next 4 years under a new major. How can you be sure that the major you are choosing is right for you?

Most students know from the last two years or so of High School what they want to do when they enter College. If you want to think hard about what you want to do then choosing the major will come. For example, let’s say that you want to be a criminal attorney. You know you have to graduate law school before becoming a lawyer, but before that you have to graduate a 4year College. If you know that Criminal Law is what you want to study then Criminal Justice is where you may want to start. Not all schools have PreLaw so that is what you would have to do if PreLaw is not offered.

Keep in mind that choosing a major will most likely have to do with the job that wish to get when you graduate from College. Since you know when you are going to College, you have plenty of time to start thinking about it and possibly doing some research. In order to save time and money, do your self a favor and really think about what you want to do in school.

The last thing you want to do is choose a major that you did not think it through. Then you have to start over again and then you may have to check out the terms of your scholarships or loans and see what happens when you have to start a whole new year over with a new major. It is best to armed to with all of the knowledge necessary before starting school.
