When you go to college, you will find that the experience is unlike high school in many ways. In high school, it was pretty hard to get to know other students if they were not in your clique. With college it is so different, here everyone has a clean slate. The most popular guy in school is no longer the most popular; the prettiest girl in school is no longer the prettiest girl. Everyone has the same insecurities about making friends.

While you are in college, you should take the time to get to know students that you wouldn’t know in high school. What sets apart these students is their majors, if you strike up a friendship with someone who is in your classes you have a starting ground for something in common. Don’t discriminate who you want to be friends with. You don’t have to be friends with everyone but if someone isn’t as athletic as you, try to be their friend. Some students have the same friends at home so making friends in school is just a way to get through, these are school friends or study friends.

Making friends isn’t easy for everyone; it is good to start slow. You don’t have to get to know everyone in your classes the first day. Most students strike up a friendship with the person that they sit next to in class or maybe a lab partner. If you are staying in the dorms, then making friends with your roommate can be a great experience. The idea of making friends is the same as it was back in kindergarten, everyone may be hesitant to talk to the person next to them but all it starts with is an introduction.

If you have no trouble talking, then introduce yourself to the person next to you. People who are a bit shyer may take a little longer. If you are really shy, listen as the teacher calls the person who sits next to you for role call and this way, you can start a conversation with a question or comment about the class without saying Hi, I am (your name). Now that you are in college, it would benefit you to make friends with students who are not like yourself. If you have a foreign exchange student in one of your classes, strike up a conversation.

What better way to make them comfortable and find out about them and their culture? You can broaden your horizons when you get to college, here you can start over. If you were shy in school, take this new experience to make over yourself. Make yourself a promise to be more outgoing and make an effort to make friends.

Sometimes other students will make the first move and introduce themselves to you. You know how hard it is for you to make friends, try not to make it harder for other students who are trying to be nice to you. Everyone is in the same boat as you are when it comes to making new friends in school. If you are willing to make friends then it will happen. Remember to try to become friends with a more diverse group of people, you will learn a lot.
