Getting Your GED

Not every student graduates High School with the traditional cap and gown. Under special circumstances students may have need to leave high school for a while but they return for the GED, which stands for the General Educational Development Exam. This test allows the student a chance to receive their high school equivalency certificate. There is a misconception that if you get a GED then you will have a hard time getting into College and that is not true. The GED has a total of 5 parts that you must pass in order to earn your certificate. These 5 parts consist of the Language Arts Writing, Social Studies, Science, Math and Language Arts Reading.

In the Language Writing Test, there will be a series of multiplechoice questions that consists of things like finding sentence errors, sentence usage and well as writing mechanics and there is an essay that students must complete. Then you will move on to the Social Studies portion. In this section you will have some multiplechoice questions that are taken from history, economics, civics and some government questions. You have to know some historic facts and basic facts.

The Science Test consists of life science, earth science and space science. You have to be ready with knowledge in physical sciences like chemistry and physics. To answer these questions you will have to have excellent reading skills, knowledge of the sciences and the ability to figure out the scientific data provided. The Math portion of the test will include some algebra, measurements and some geometry questions. You will see data analysis and some probability questions. You will need to have some knowledge of graph, charts, tables and diagrams.

If you are working on your GED, don’t panic about the test, make sure that you read every single question carefully. Don’t try to cram in last minute information, as the old saying goes if you don’t know it by now, you won’t know it. By trying to cram in extra information is just going to confuse you. When you are at the test, try not to leave any question unanswered, even if you have to guess, make it an educated guess and do the best you can.

You can actually find some practice tests. These will help you go a long way on the test. If you are taking a GED Prep Course then you will want to take the practice test there. If you are running into any problems on any section that you know that is going to be on the test, get some extra tutoring from someone who specializes in tutoring in the GED.

If Math is not your thing, then you should spend a bit more time on that subject. Find out how the scoring is going to work and you are stronger in the other sections than you are in Math then you may not need to be so strong. Practice makes perfect.
