Choosing The Right Size College

There are two different types of colleges; the smaller colleges and then you have the larger Colleges. If you are planning to go to college in the next year, you will have to decide whether a smaller college or a bigger one will best suit your needs. You may ask yourself what is the difference? There are some things that remain the same between the two and there are some differences. Let’s take a look at some of the positive and negatives about each and see if this helps you decide which is best.

A larger college has more flexibility when it comes to their classes. There are probably more majors to choose from in a larger college. Therefore there are more students that they have to accommodate. In turn this means that classes for your major will be available more often. Let’s say, that you are majoring in Accounting and the one class you need is Accounting 101 in a larger college you may find that this class is being taught 10 times per week. Now in a smaller college, if you have the same class it may be offered 5 times. There is more flexibility in the scheduling of classes.

Another positive with a larger college is that there are more sports, drama and other extra curricular activities offered. There would be more interest in a large college. If you are trying to get an athletic scholarship, the larger colleges have more visibility. But this is something that you would have to research a bit further.

With a larger college there would be more dorm rooms and a larger campus for students to live on. Some smaller colleges have a certain amount of room per year and there may be a waiting list. Larger colleges have more room and less of a waiting list. Some positive points for smaller colleges are they have a more personal touch. Have you ever seen a movie or a TV show where the larger schools have classrooms the size of a football stadium. With a smaller college, you will have more personal size classrooms that make it easier to learn and it is less intimidating, especially for first year students.

One of the best things about smaller colleges and parents will agree is that the tuition is lower. You can make a list of the schools that you want to attend and see the number of teachers to student ratios. There is a closer student teacher relationship in smaller students than in larger schools. Each type of school has its own good points and their own bad points.

It is up to you as the student who will be attending these schools to do the best research that you can. If you want the excitement of a larger school then the larger schools are for you but if you prefer the smaller more cozy style college then the smaller schools are for you. Make a list of the classes, majors and tuitions of both types and then see which school offers the best education, since that is the most important thing.
