Cheerleading is a sport but dance isnt?Related ArticlesFor many years cheerleading and dance were always considered as an art and not a sport. In the last two years cheerleaders have complained so much about how they get hurt as much as athletes do and that they don’t understand why they can’t be considered as a sport. Now they are considered a sport.
Dance teams around the world were confused by this change and on why they weren’t also told that they can be a sport. Dance teams are also know as winter guards or colorguards at some schools. They were told that they couldn’t be a team because they are part of the marching band. In a way we are but in a way were are not.
Not only do dancers also do lifts and jumps like the cheerleaders but we work out if not more then the cheerleaders do. Cheerleaders have an off season depending on what sport they cheer for. Unlike dancers who work all year round and have more then one thing that they have to do. Most dancers don’t do just one type of dancing. Being a dancer and a cheerleader I can tell you that my cheerleading practices are much easier than any of my dance classes. I take six different types of dance classes and I have to work harder then I have ever had to at cheerleading. Pyramids are normally that hardest thing that we have to do. I have never had a half time dance for cheerleading that is harder then my dance team dances. Girls and guys on dance teams have to take dance classes on top of the dance team practice were cheerleaders have only practice and maybe a summer camp or clinic.
Dancers and guard members have always competed with cheerleaders on who works harder and who is stronger. Being in all three I have noticed that dancers and guard members are right. They work 10 times harder then I have ever seen any cheerleader ever work in my entire life.
My guard instructor always tells us that on the school song as long as we show up the cheerleaders that she doesn’t care how much we mess up. Now if you were to tell a cheerleading squad that they would just laugh and say that we never could be better then them. That is really true when it comes to my school.
I really want to make a cheerleader spend a week in my shoes to see how hard it is to be a dancer and a guard member. It’s not as easy as it looks. You always hear people say oh guard don’t do anything but spin poles. No we do we spin flags, rifles, and sabers while moving on a football field and we can’t drop them when we toss them or hit any of the band members.
Most dancers feel the same way as most color guard members that they cant stand how cheerleaders act because they think they are everything and cant do anything wrong and that they are so hot. I have yet to meet a cheerleader that I like at my school. I cheer outside of school because I don’t feel like being told that I’m too good for someone when I know I’m not.
