Ten Commandements take away from first amendm

    Early in August, an Alabama district judge, Myron Thompson, ordered the removal of the Ten Commandments monument in the judicial building. The judges claimed that it violated the U.S. Constitution’s principle of separation of church and state.

    As an American we have the right to display our religious beliefs. The Alabama case has been blown out of portion.

    Many federal documents express the idea of a nation that is lead by God. The pledge of allegiance; U.S. Currency, the constitution. "Our Founding Fathers must be spinning in their graves. This is the worst kind of political correctness run amok," Bond said. "What's next? Will the courts now strip 'so help me God' from the pledge taken by new presidents?" Sen. Kit Bond.

    A statement of religious freedoms is not wrong. Theses ideas and concepts is what America was built on. The Constitution never proclaims a national religion. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Bill of Rights (Article 1)

    We seem to draw ourselves to religion when we need it. When the tragedy of September 11th occurred, places of worship attendance rose. Months passed and attendance slowed down to the regulars attending.

    If a senator were to pass a bill to declare a national religion than, than as citizens we have the right to petition that bill. The difference between these situations is in Alabama the judge Thompson is not declaring this monument as a national religion. It comes down to freedom of speech.

    We were given the right to express ourselves and now it seems that people want to take those rights we have away.

    The concept of “separation of church and state” is outdated. We are a country that everyday involve religion into are lives and almost all actions could be seen as violating this unwritten law.

    The media’s coverage of this story was not positive and did not give viewers both angles. We constantly saw how this violated church and state. When Sept. 11 occurred the media portrayed and showed people praying on the streets and in their homes.

    What has changed from two years ago? We have lost touch in what are country stands for. We have taken away the right for prayer in public places, and have striped the people of the first amendment.

    Has our nation came down to the point where we are willing to change the religious background our nation was built on? Our ancestors have come here to escape religious persecution. Our land is a symbol of freedom, which is now being slowly taken away.
