Pirates of the Caribbean

The lure of gold, mutiny, adventure and two dashing pirates played by Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom called as I watched this movie. From the beginning, the screen was filled with the adventure of the high seas. William Turner (Orlando Bloom), a lowly blacksmith, enlisted the help of the scallywag pirate, Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to rescue his highclass crush, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) from Captain Barbossa of the cursed ghost ship, The Black Pearl. After “commandeering” a ship from the English Navy, Sparrow and Turner gathered a crew and began the attack on Barbossa. The plot thickens as Elizabeth finds the true curse of the Black Pearl. It’s crew and captain are skeletons, with the moon revealing their true form. Besides the obvious advantage of an amazing cast, this movie appeals to all age groups. The nonexistence of foul language and lack of blood saves the weak stomached but keeps enough action throughout the movie for the adventurous. The graphics of the skeletons are surprisingly realistic. The plot, although unbelievable is well thought out. There are a few loopholes but the history of the curse is well told. Jack Sparrow keeps the slapstick comedy going, and Will Turner is the wannabe pirate. Woman are not portrayed as helpless, as Elizabeth discusses with Barbossa a trade to save her homeland. The plot may not be realistic, the pirates may not be the cutthroat ruffians history dictates, but this movie is definitely one of the better ones created. Disney should be commended for showing that blood and gore aren’t the elements to a good movie. Starting as a Disneyland ride, Pirates of the Caribbean has soared in the box office. The DVD has amazing extra’s and the video is worth the purchase. Leaving the theater, I couldn’t shake the desire to haul out a sword, steal a ship and begin singing “The pirates life for me.”
