Freedom Writers is a sensational, touching movie. This movie has people crying, laughing, and thinking about how people are really living in our world. In a compelling story about how a teacher helps under privilege children, it is obvious that one person really can change the lives of many. This movie is about a newly married, inexperienced high school teacher played by Hilary Swank. Swank tries to turn her classroom around in order to create success in a community that is striving in poverty. The many different races, backgrounds, and beliefs of the students in the classroom make diversity hard to overcome. April Lee Hernandez (Eva) is one of the lead characters who play a frustrated student who isn’t open to the idea of change in the classroom to begin with. As the film progresses, Eva opens up, as do many of the other characters, and learns to appreciate the English program that the school has to offer. As the Golden Rule says, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”; the teacher gives, the students give, the community gives. This is an inspiring story. For those who have not seen the movie, it is based on a true story. Erin Gruwell, played by Swank, is the true inspiration to this film. The touching story about Gruwell is based on a true story. Her English students, who read The Diary of Anne Frank, achieved the unimaginable and got Holocaust survivors to visit their school and talk about their experiences. If this compelling story of true life experiences and overcoming diversity doesn’t keep your attention, I'm sure Patrick Dempsey will. The Grey's Anatomy star plays the role of Scott, Swank's husband. The two go through some tough times together. Further into the movie you realize that sometimes with a busy life and dedication, the thought of a husband is better than actually having the husband, as we learn in the movie. Freedom Writers was a motivational, touching, and inspirational movie. Touching lives of students and making them actually enjoy work in the classroom is all a teacher needs to do. Whether good or bad, when you step foot into a classroom you always leave with something. I left this movie in a positive mindset and with a better appreciation towards motivated educators. I give Freedom Writers five stars go and see it for yourself!
