You can sit back in the comfort of your own home and offer people details about you in order to gain friendship or just someone to talk to. With online friendship sites, you can get to know someone based on talk and not what they look like. It is a great way to find out about someone based on his or her personality and not on looks.

There are downsides about meeting online friends, when you are online you can pretend to be anyone that you want to be. We don’t mean that you can be guarded about what you say but we mean that someone can tell you lies in order to gain your trust. Chances are that it won’t happen to you but these days it is best to be safe than sorry. Make sure that you are using a secure website before adding any of your personal information to it. Don’t put any personal information such as banking information or social security numbers into any online website. Try to find the websites that are free, you don’t want to enter your credit card number if you can’t help it.

If you come across a website that requires a fee then purchase a prepaid credit card from CVS, Rite Aid or WalMart and load enough money on there for the fee. These credit cards are safe and the only money that is on it is what you put there. Once you have found a safe way to find online friends, you may be ready to meet in person. Here is where you have to be careful, you can take just so much from people online. There are some genuine people who are really looking for friends but there are a small few who are looking for something else.

If you decide to set up a meeting with an online friend, you should make sure that you meet in a public place. The safer places would be the local Mall at the food court or at public restaurant. You may want to invite a friend to go with you, if not make sure that someone knows where you are going. Have them call you at a certain time or text you to make sure that you are ok. You will want to make sure that your cell phone is always charged. Always be aware of your surroundings and never get into someone’s car. Arrange to meet them somewhere and never go to someone’s house, even if they say they live at home.

You never know and try to get a phone number. Try to verify the phone number with the phone company to make sure that you know where this person is really calling from. There is nothing wrong with making friends but it is always best to be safe than sorry.
