Life of Terror

The recent war against dictator Saddam Hussein has opened eyes and mouths around the world. Most say that this war is not one we should be fighting. Some say Bush is doing it for the oil, some claim that this is a chance to finish what his father started. But whatever the reason, the main priority is to free the Iraqi people of an oppressive and murderous regime. Iraq is a land ruled by death and terror, fear and grief.

Ever since Hussein came to power thirtysome years ago, Iraq has been flushed down the toilet of world relations and sturdy economics. Hussein has 9 or 10 palaces, all lavishly decorated with swimming pools, and all the latest western technology. In an interview with one of his exwives, we found out that one of the dictator's favorite past times is to sit down in one of his fancy Italian suites, eat ice cream, and watch tapes of his public executions. And sometimes people are executed for 'treason', which in Saddamese means 'I don't like you so you're dead.'

Three days after this bloodthirsty tyrant came to power, he held a meeting with all the prominent political figures in Iraq. He then took the stage, and started reading names off a list. When a persons name was called, he was taken out back and shot. Their crimes? Working against the Ba'ath party. Strange how they themselves were members of the Ba'ath party, isn't it? And throughout his reign, the blood of his people has been splattered across the pages of history. He gassed Kurdish villages in the north, took over Kuwait, and is even now killing those who refuse to join the Iraqi army. He has always spent Iraqs income on mostly his palaces, and very little on healthcare and food for his starving people.

According to a special about his life last summer, he had been planning to build a reflecting pool in Iraq shaped like his thumbprint. The print would be crafted out of stone, and then the area would be filled with water. Another example of his over size ego is back when Iraq was fighting Iran. Even though both sides declared a ceasefire and there was no winner, Hussein to this day declares victory. We can only ask ourseles what Bush Sr. was thinking when he did not take Hussein out when he had the chance, and hope that Dubya does the right thing and leads us to victory.
