Care About Schools' Security?

I had to write an article for my English class about metal detectors installed in schools because some schools are starting to consider that idea. We even had a debate regarding this topic. My teacher told me to submit this article to public so I decided to do it on Student Center. The article below will be about my opinion on metal detectors for schools.

I believe installing metal detectors in schools to keep schools safe is imperative and necessary. Schools are where most kids go to get the education needed for them to succeed; it is a considerable way to emphasize that security within school grounds plays a very significant role in accomplishing students’ goals. Installing metal detectors is a great step toward improving school safety because first, scanning students while they are at schools does not count as violating their civil rights, as some could argue; instead, it protects them in many ways. Second, a metal detector is a great tool to detect weapons and other dangerous objects that can lead into fatalities. Third, it is important to keep students and staffs safe in school environment.

Scanning students while they are within school grounds undoubtedly do not count as violating their civil rights; instead, it protects them in many aspects. Combining the schools’ important interest in preventing acts and threats of violence with privacy issues, we can reach the conclusion that these problems demand an appropriate response because they are not going to disintegrate; if we continue to ignore them and fail to take proper measures, these issues are only going to get worse. When students are aware that they have to regularly pass through the scanning process, they will soon compensate and adjust their habits.

A metal detector is a great tool to detect weapons and other dangerous objects that can lead into fatalities. Students taking fists and feet to each other are far less lethal than a fight where guns and knives are involved. I agree that students need positive parental influence, and it is a challenging responsibility for parents to be aware of what is happening in today’s world. It is true that it would take students much longer to enter the school if they had to pass through a metal detector, but that is a small price to pay to protect school members. It is always better to have thoroughness that speed, because by being attentive, more issues could be taken care of.

It is indispensable for us to work as a team in keeping students and staffs safe in school environment. According to research, schools definitely are the safest place for students to be; because of this reason, even one violent act that can cause deaths or injuries on school property is too many. Students are not able to learn when they are in fear and that should be the primary responsibility of the schools to reach a solution. Some youths might skip school because they are afraid of being bullied or assaulted; studies show that safe schools have higher test scores and other positive academic outcomes than unsafe schools. We need to balance prevention, intervention and security by evaluating plans regularly, use research on effective programs, and include suggestions on installing necessary security systems.

Considering all the reasons state above, I believe it is best for metal detectors to be installed at schools. No school, small or large, rich or poor, is completely immune to school violence; no student, with disabilities or normal progress, can be perfectly safe at school, but it is substantive to take account of all the possibilities we could take to make schools more secure. Our educational institutions are the most important resource of our society; it is in those schools that many of us will make our beginnings. In these wonderful institutions exists something all can be part off; it is real fellowship and a strong sense of togetherness that might help us solve demanding problems like these. Safe schools do not let their kids fall through the cracks of failure and violence; therefore, it is essential to have metal detectors installed in our schools to make sure that our safety issues are handled appropriately.
